The Division of Hematology was founded in 1989. At that time cell counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit measurements were carried out on a Coulter T890 hematology analyzer. We analyzed 80-100 samples per day. In 1992 we purchased a Technicon H1 hematology analyzer that allowed performance of complete 5 part differentials. Currently we analyze about 800 samples per day and 200,000 samples per year. Automated cell counts, 5 part differentials are measured on a Sysmex XE 2100D hematology analyzer, while outpatient samples are measured on a Siemens Advia 120 and an Advia 2102 analyzer. These analyzers determine myeloperoxidase activity and offer sophisticated data on red cell parameters such as hypochromia and microcytosis. We were the first laboratory in Hungary where the reticulocyte count was determined by automated methodology in 1991. Today 7000 reticulocyte analyses are performed on the Advia 120 and Advia 2120 per year. Requests are accepted through the Medsolution system and results are also available online. Analyses at Division of Pediatric Diagnostics are supervised by this division. Remaining close to children bedside, division of Pediatric Diagnostics joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine in 2002 and works as a complex clinical chemistry and hematology laboratory unit based on micro-method assays. Under strict economic conditions we have to meet the requirements of high professional quality (external and internal quality control system, ISO (International Organization for Standardization), online communication), therefore parallel analyses were gradually reduced. Nowadays, we primarily perform hematological, urine, faces, serum and sweat-electrolyte tests for 13 outpatient consultations. The majority of annual 60,000 analyses is of outpatient check-up. To avoid longer delay and travelling twice-a-day with children suffered from chronic diseases, results are validated and reported in the morning. For inpatient subjects we carry out urgent tests and unique analyses which are not attainable elsewhere. Complete blood count (from venous and capillary blood), staining of peripheral blood or bone marrow smears, determinations of methemoglobin level and RBC osmotic resistance are also parts of our hematology profile. Besides the daily routine duties (such as urinary N-acetyl-ß-glucoseaminidase; NAG-ase), the examination of congenital metabolic diseases is a special task. Of these abnormalities, we perform screening and follow-up of mucopolysaccharidosis, alkaptonuria, certain amino acid metabolic diseases, and 7-dehydro-cholesterol-reductase deficiency.
